Staff training: Vocational training

The Swiss economy is establishing itself on the international market with its high-quality innovative products. However, the development and manufacture of such products require highly qualified professionals, such as those who have completed vocational training. This kind of training is differentiated by its close proximity to the practical aspect of work, a large part of this training being completed within companies.

In Switzerland, two out of three young people and young adults join the world of work through preliminary vocational training. At the end of their training, these young professionals are in high demand on the labor market. Many of them continue with their training in the context of higher level vocational training or at a specialist college, and will then take on demanding technical responsibilities and careers. Vocational training therefore contributes decisively to the success of companies.

Strong emphasis on practice

The strength of Swiss vocational training lies in the close link it establishes between theory and practice. A large part of this training takes place in-house and the training content is essentially determined by the sectors and professional associations (umbrella organizations). Thanks to this proximity to the practical aspect of the job, the qualifications acquired during the training correspond to the qualifications required by the world of work. Individuals who have earned a vocational training certificate are therefore highly prized on the labor market.

A profitable investment

Vocational training relies on companies’ willingness to train apprentices, because they can offer apprenticeship positions for preliminary vocational training and support employees who are developing within the context of higher level vocational training.

Training providers have calculated correctly: the productivity of people who have completed training and students, as a general rule, broadly offsets the costs of training. In addition, companies that train apprentices are investing in success in the long term. They are ensuring that their company and sector will have enough qualified professionals in the future as well. Apart from the fact that they are making an important contribution to professional and social integration, this role means that training providers are highly regarded, both by customers and business partners. And so companies that train apprentices are strengthening their image. With the “Training Provider” label, they are highlighting, in a relevant way, their commitment to training.
