SECO’s platform to help importers

SECO’s Importations platform aims to support companies importing into Switzerland. This information site sets out the rules applicable for marketing foreign products in Switzerland.

Products imported into Switzerland must follow certain technical requirements in terms of health and safety. To help importing companies identify which rules apply for a specific product, the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) has launched an information site called the Import Platform.

Importers are responsible for the conformity of their products with the applicable technical requirements. Due to the increasing complexity of products and their manufacturing processes, various laws and orders may also need to be taken into account. For example, smartphones must comply with both the requirements relating to low-voltage equipment and the requirements concerning electromagnetic compatibility. Some goods also require specific conformity certificates, particularly for trade with the European Union.

The Importations Platform provides companies with an inventory of Swiss technical requirements by product type, along with an explanation of the legal tools simplifying imports. However, it does not include any information about the other legal aspects important for importing, such as tax matters and customs duties.
