E-governance: the Swiss strategy

E-governance saves time for the economy, the government and the population. The Swiss authorities have established a strong policy in the area of e-government.

The e-governance offices offer enterprises the ability to settle all types of administrative formalities electronically. These interfaces remove their burden and enable them to devote more time to their main business activities.

Documents that had previously circulated from one office to another in writing, eventually reaching government customers, must now be completed and transmitted electronically.

The Swiss e-governance strategy emphasizes the customer-friendly orientation of administrative procedures. The information must be able to go directly from customers to the competent offices, eventually being transferred to the archives, all without any compatibility issues. For this, it is necessary to have common rules for secure and structured management of information and electronic documents.

Services for everyone

The Swiss authorities wish not only for the private economy to effect its transactions with the government (Confederation, cantons, municipalities) electronically, but also for the various government sectors to modernize their processes and communicate together in this manner.

In addition, the Swiss people should be able to effect their main transactions—the most frequent and burdensome ones—with the authorities using e-governance services.

To do this, common solutions must be established at every level of the federal system. The transparency of planning instruments, regularly updated, must in addition ensure the traceability of actions. The responsible authorities have also provided for universal access (including the elderly and handicapped) to e-governance solutions.
