(19.04.2023) Retail sales had a good month in February 2023. According to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), the sector – excluding petrol stations – recorded a year-on-year increase in sales of 3.4%.

After adjusting for seasonal variations, the increase was 1.8%. In real terms, the figures also indicate a slower increase of 0.3% between February 2022 and February 2023, after adjustments for price rises. Month-on-month retail sales in real terms increased by 1.1% between January and February 2023.

In the food, beverage, and tobacco sector, overall sales rose by 2.5% in nominal terms, although this increase primarily reflects faster inflation of food prices.

In real terms, Swiss food, beverage, and tobacco retailers suffered a 2.9% decrease in turnover. The same trend was observed on a monthly basis: the sector's turnover increased by 0.5% in nominal terms but decreased by 0.1% in real terms between January and February 2023.

The non-food sector performed better. Turnover increased by 4.3% in nominal terms and 2.5% in real terms in February 2023, compared to February 2022. The sector's growth even reached 3% in nominal terms and 3.1% in real terms between January and February 2023.
