Responsible companies rely on new guidelines

(05.07.2023) As a reference for multinational corporations and SMEs interested in corporate social responsibility (CSR), the OECD Guidelines have recently been updated. The latest version incorporates new themes related to the environment and digitalization.

Since their inception in 1976, the "Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises on Responsible Business Conduct" have undergone regular updates to align with societal changes and the evolving international economy. In June 2023, these non-binding recommendations were adopted by the 38 members of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), including Switzerland, along with 13 other non-OECD member states. These countries alone account for two-thirds of global trade and investment.

The revised version emphasizes that companies should exercise due diligence to identify and address the adverse environmental impacts of their activities, products, or services. The types of effects, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation, and deforestation, are now more precisely defined, taking into account the latest international agreements. The updated guidelines also introduce new recommendations concerning the circular economy and animal welfare.

Another significant addition is the inclusion of due diligence in the field of technology, covering areas such as development, financing, sales, licensing, trade, and use, including data collection and utilization. Additionally, a higher level of protection in e-commerce is now required.

Further changes encompass extending the recommendations to combat all forms of corruption, promoting the publication of information on responsible business conduct, and ensuring visibility of the guidelines in different signatory countries. In Switzerland, the National Contact Point is responsible for implementation and serves as the liaison with local companies. They are planning a comprehensive information session on this subject, scheduled for November 30th.
