Job market stabilizes at high level

(26.10.2022) The Swiss job market remains strong in the third quarter of 2022. The Swiss Job Market Monitor, published by the Adecco Group and the University of Zurich, confirms the stagnation trend observed since the beginning of the year with a 1% quarter-on-quarter increase.

After a year of strong growth in 2021, fueled by a particularly robust post-COVID recovery, labor market growth slowed in 2022 due to cyclical uncertainties. The index still shows a 15% increase between the third quarters of 2021 and 2022.

Still driven by strong demand, the job market for industrial and watchmaking occupations has enjoyed a favorable trend since the beginning of the year. All the occupational categories in these sectors recorded a distinct improvement between 2021 and 2022 compared with 2020 and 2021: an increase of 34% for mechanics and technicians, 19% for watchmaking, metalworking and jewelry professions, 14% for product designers and testers and 3% for engineers.

"The watch, metal and jewelry trades have benefited from the boom in the watch industry," says Marcel Keller, Swiss market manager at Adecco. The expert points out that the increase in watch exports appeared to continue in August 2022.

However, qualified workers are in short supply in Switzerland at the moment. As a result, Adecco has launched the "Adecco Watch Academy" to enable people interested in watchmaking to learn more about the industry and increase their chances of finding a job.
