(26.01.2022) Despite the resurgence of the epidemic, the Swiss economy is holding up well. The KOF Swiss Economic Institute’s Business Situation Indicator improved by 27.9 points in December 2021. This confirms the recovery momentum that has been evident for several months.

With the exception of November 2021, when it remained stable, the KOF Business Situation Indicator has steadily improved since January 2021. Overall, it increased by 25.6 points between the first and last months of the year.

Compared to November, the business situation was predominantly good, according to the companies surveyed by the KOF, and confidence in the future was relatively stable. Only at the end of the year was there more uncertainty about business developments in the coming months.

The Business Situation Indicator rose in the manufacturing sector for the second consecutive month (+0.7 points to 30.1), but fell short of its September level (32.8 points). The trend was slightly less favorable in the retail sector (-1.3 points). In the financial services and insurance sector, the indicator fell for the third consecutive month.

The Zurich region and Eastern Switzerland are the regions where business improved the most. On the other hand, the situation was somewhat less encouraging in the Lake Geneva region and in Ticino.
