
(26.03.2025) Turnover in the secondary and tertiary sectors declined in the fourth quarter of 2024. Year-on-year, it decreased by -1.4%. Employment, however, rose by +0.5% over the same period, according to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
The services sector saw its overall turnover contract significantly year-on-year (-4.2%), while employment increased slightly (+0.5%). Retail trade revenues, meanwhile, remained stable, but employment fell (-1.1%). In the secondary sector (industry and construction), turnover rose by 2.6% and employment by 0.6% in the fourth quarter of 2024.
Between October and December 2024, industrial and construction companies increased their revenues by +2.5% and +3.2% respectively. The pharmaceutical industry recorded the third-highest turnover growth (+6.5%) in the secondary sector, behind energy supply (+24.8%) and civil engineering (+15.0%).
Pharma contributed significantly to the overall growth of the secondary sector, accounting for 12.6% of total turnover. The sector also posted the highest increase in employment (+6.1%) across the whole of 2024 compared to the previous year. Although the pharmaceutical industry represents only a modest share of employment in the secondary sector (4.9%), it nonetheless holds a significant position in terms of turnover. This reflects the sector’s high added value for the Swiss economy, according to the FSO statement.
