Bankruptcies back on the rise

A man with empty pant pockets.

(23.02.2022) Bankruptcies are on the rise in Switzerland. According to consulting firm Dun&Bradstreet, over 410 companies have had to close down due to insolvency since last January. Meanwhile, newly-founded businesses increased only marginally over the same period.

This is a 28% rise in the number of bankruptcies in Switzerland compared with January 2021. However, it is not unexpected: for several months, experts have been fearing a wave of insolvencies. The rapid escalation of bankruptcy cases is believed to have been caused by the end of the aid measures implemented to combat the economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nor is the trend consistent throughout Switzerland. Bankruptcies (due to insolvency) have risen by 53% in the Zurich region, 43% in Eastern Switzerland and 41% in the Espace Mittelland. Southwestern Switzerland and Ticino are less affected, with increases of 27% and 18% respectively. The northwest of the country (+4%) and Central Switzerland (-3%) fared better.

In January, the number of new company entries in the commercial register rose by just 2% compared to January 2021. Last month, a total of 3,812 new companies were founded.

The most dynamic region in terms of new business start-ups is southwestern Switzerland (+7%), followed by central Switzerland (+4%) and northwestern Switzerland (+4%). In Ticino, the number of registrations fell by 14%.
