VoIP evaluation: The ideal conditions of VoIP

What checks need to be carried out when purchasing a “voice over IP” telephony system? Operating system, open standards and flexibility. 

As a general rule, VoIP systems work on all hardware platforms. Of course, VoIP system suppliers will still attempt to sell customers products that make them dependent on hardware and/or software. The reasoning does not usually work in the customer’s favor. For the customer, the following advantages are useful:

  • A software solution which is independent from the hardware with an operating system which is as standardized as possible.
  • Possible use of peripherals with the support of open standards (SIP/H.323).
  • Flexible areas of use. It must be possible for the soft client telephone to be used as a normal telephone and to be adapted to changing requirements.
