Swiss watch exports on the rise

(10.08.2022) The Swiss watchmaking sector has continued to record an increase in exports. According to statistics from the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH), more than 7.2 million watches were sold abroad between January and June 2022.

Compared to the first half of 2021, this is an increase in volume equivalent to 225,000 pieces. In June 2022, watch exports amounted to CHF 2.1 billion, representing an 8.1% growth compared to June 2021.

Entry-level models (< CHF 200) and high-end models (> CHF 3,000) performed best in terms of volume and value. The former showed +23.5% in volume and +9.1% in value, and the latter +7.2% in volume and +11% in value. In contrast, the mid-range category (CHF 200-500) fell sharply by -29.5% in volume and -31.6% in value.

Excluding China and Hong Kong, the top four export markets saw growth in sales of Swiss watch products. The United States remained in first place with CHF 324.6 million (+17.5%), but the strongest growth was in the United Kingdom (+28.7%).
