Swiss economy has potential to attract brains from around the world

Figures attracted to a magnet.

(19.01.2022) Switzerland remains the most attractive country for talent. The Swiss economy ranks first in the IMD World Talent Ranking, which is compiled by the Lausanne-based IMD Institute. This is the sixth consecutive time that the country has topped this annual ranking.

Despite the pandemic, the attractiveness of the Swiss economy for international talent has not waned. In more detailed terms, Switzerland ranks first in terms of investment and development of the local workforce as well as in terms of pure appeal (ability to attract foreign talent and retain local talent). It ranks third with regard to the strengths and skills present in the country.

IMD emphasizes that Switzerland's performance is strongly supported by its public expenditure in education, its implementation of apprenticeships, the prioritization of employee training and the overall effectiveness of the health system. In addition, the quality of life and work environment are very attractive.

Cost of living and income tax are considered to be deterrents to attracting international talent to Switzerland. Nevertheless, the country has the most appeal when it comes to wages in the tertiary sector and in management positions.

In comparison, Switzerland's neighbouring countries are lower in the overall rankings. Germany is in 10th place, while France is 25th and Italy 35th. Austria, on the other hand, is in the top 10, in 6th place. Sweden and Luxembourg complete the top ten.
