Hotels: foreign travelers make a strong comeback

(21.12.2022) The hotel industry posted encouraging results in summer 2022. According to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), 22.4 million overnight stays were recorded in Swiss accommodations between May and October 2022, an increase of 21.9% compared to summer 2021.

This is the second-best industry performance in the last 30 years – coming in just behind the 2019 summer season. Growth was fueled by a surge in foreign demand following the end of travel restrictions due to the Covid pandemic. Foreign nationals booked nearly 10.4 million room nights (+84.6%). The months of May (+250.7%) and June (+240.1%) saw the largest increases.

With a 466.4% increase, travelers from India made a return to Swiss accommodations this summer. Americans (+273.7%), Britons (+248.2%) and Gulf residents (+84.3%) also contributed significantly to this growth.

Despite this impressive increase, which is explained by sluggish demand in 2021, foreign demand remained below the level observed in 2019 (-18.6%).

For its part, domestic demand weakened slightly compared to summer 2021 (-6%), to 11.9 million overnight stays. However, the number of overnight stays by Swiss residents remained significantly higher (+21.3%) than in the same period in 2019.

Of the country's 13 tourism regions, ten experienced an increase in overnight stays between the summers of 2021 and 2022. The largest increase was recorded in the Zurich region (+81.6%). In contrast, Ticino (-14.9%), Jura and Three Lakes (-3.3%) and Graubünden (-3%) saw a decline in overnight stays over the same period.
