Unemployment up 20% in one year

(23.07.2025) The Swiss job market remained stable in June 2025. Unemployment fell slightly, with 1,067 fewer registered individuals (-0.8%) than in May, but rose sharply year-on-year (+21.4%), according to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).

Adjusted for seasonal variations, the number of unemployed rose by 3,273 persons (+2.5%) between May and June 2025.

The FSO report notes a slight increase in unemployment among young people (aged 15-24) compared to the previous month, with 74 additional individuals (+0.7%), bringing the total to 10,700 (+19.6% compared to June 2024). Among persons aged 50-64, unemployment decreased slightly between May and June 2025 (-0.9%, -325 persons) but increased significantly over the year (+20% / +5,902 persons).

In June 2025, Switzerland recorded 206,868 job seekers. This figure includes all individuals registered with a Regional Employment Office (RAV), including those not immediately available for work, for example, due to participation in reintegration programs. This represents an increase of 0.5% compared to the previous month and 18.2% year-on-year. Seasonally adjusted, the number of job seekers reached 216,020 in June 2025, an increase of 2.4% compared to May 2025.

Data from the end of June 2025 show that 3,136 individuals exhausted their entitlement to unemployment benefits in April 2025 (+38.8% compared to March). At the same time, 39,757 vacancies were reported to the RAVs (+4.2% month-on-month / +0.4% year-on-year), 57.1% of which were subject to the mandatory notification requirement. Seasonally adjusted, this figure stood at 35,920 (-4.3% compared to May 2025).

Short-time work affected 13,987 persons in March 2025, a decrease of 2.8% compared to the previous month.
