Automotive market slows in first half of 2025

A red car and a rising and falling curve

(06.08.2025) The Swiss automotive market continues to weaken. In June 2025, 21,810 new passenger cars were registered in Switzerland, a decline of 3.9% compared to the same month in 2024, according to the umbrella association of vehicle importers, Auto-Suisse.

Across the first half of 2025, the downturn is even more pronounced, with registrations falling by 6.7% to 113,133 vehicles, down from 121,218 the previous year. This trend contrasts with the recovery seen in much of Europe. Even neighboring countries such as Germany and Italy are rebounding and approaching pre-pandemic levels.

Despite this subdued overall picture, battery electric vehicles continue to perform well. In June, 4,813 fully electric cars were registered, representing a 14.2% year-on-year increase. Over the first six months of 2025, registrations of electric vehicles rose by 8.5%, reaching 23,203 units.

However, this growth has not been enough to offset the overall market decline. Unlike the European Union, Switzerland has not introduced support measures for the automotive sector. The EU-27, for example, has relaxed CO2 target requirements: manufacturers may now calculate average emissions over a three-year period, provided they offset any excess emissions at the end of that timeframe. Auto-Suisse is calling for similarly effective incentives to be introduced in Switzerland.

The association nonetheless welcomes Parliament’s adoption of the "right to charge" measure, particularly as plug-in vehicles now account for 30.5% of the market in 2025. The motion, passed to the Federal Council, calls for guaranteed access to charging stations in rental apartment buildings.
