SMEs adapt to talent shortages

(16.03.2022) Swiss companies are experiencing a shortage of skilled workers. According to Credit Suisse’s "Staff development at a time of skilled labor shortages" study, more than 50 percent of SMEs anticipate future difficulties in finding employees.

Of the 800 small and medium-sized companies surveyed, over two-thirds report that they are already suffering from a lack of skilled labor in their recruitment efforts. This trend is likely to worsen, especially given an aging population and rapid technological changes.

In light of this, companies need to leverage their strengths to attract the most qualified personnel to join their ranks. This "battle for talent" is pushing SMEs to review their working conditions. The pandemic has shown that employees are looking for flexible working models. Approximately one-third of SMEs lose their appeal because they cannot adapt to this paradigm shift. Small companies are the most affected.

To retain talent, many rely on employee development for their staff. Of the SMEs surveyed, 77% of them are providing their employees with continuing education, and the majority of them offer ongoing training, particularly to retain staff. 93% of SMEs offer at least one continuing education opportunity.

Leveraging the company's strengths is also a solution in times of shortage. 13% of SMEs systematically favor in-house talent for filling management positions and 43% normally do this in most cases.
