Watchmaking sees unprecedented hiring

(07.02.2024) Employment remains particularly robust in the watchmaking industry. In 2023, the number of employees in the sector increased by 7.3% to reach 65,237, which is 4,414 more than in 2022, according to the Employers' Association of the Swiss Watchmaking Industry.

This marks the first time in over half a century that the watchmaking sector has experienced such consecutive employment growth over two fiscal years. In 2022, the rise in workforce was driven by an increase in production positions, while in 2023, the most significant growth occurred at the administrative level.

Indeed, the number of hires in this category had decreased in the previous years before rebounding significantly (+2,680 employees / +17.9%) in 2023. However, the category of production jobs also saw an increase in 2023, though more moderate (+1,588 / +3.2%), mainly due to a shortage of qualified labor.

Qualified personnel are in high demand in the industry: recruitment of individuals with higher education degrees and vocational diplomas increased by 9.7% and 6.1%, respectively. Additionally, the number of apprentices starting their training in the watchmaking industry also significantly rose in 2023 (+14.5%).

Regarding the geographical distribution of jobs, Neuchâtel (17,385), Bern (13,772), and Geneva (11,831) continue to lead as the top three watchmaking cantons. However, the cantons of Solothurn (+11.6%), Fribourg (+9.8%), and Jura (+9%) were the most dynamic in terms of employment.

Despite these positive results, the Watchmaking Federation urges caution in 2024, emphasizing that the industry may face strong headwinds (inflation, economic and geopolitical conditions, and unfavorable exchange rates).
