(12.04.2023) The number of new businesses created in Switzerland in 2022 remained high, although it did not reach the record levels seen in 2021. According to the latest Dun&Bradstreet study, 49,964 new companies were established in Switzerland in 2022.
The survey conducted by the American firm indicates that the number of business start-ups in Switzerland decreased slightly last year (-1%), although it remained at its second-highest level since 2019. The study’s authors highlight current economic difficulties (such as inflation acceleration, energy crisis, and disruptions in supply chains), which have made the business environment less accommodating.
Dirk Radetzki, Regional Director for Central Europe at Dun&Bradstreet, says that given the current circumstances, the performance in Switzerland in 2022 is quite remarkable. In comparison, both Austria (-4.2%) and Germany (-12.7%) experienced significantly greater declines in business start-ups in 2022.
With 9,067 entries in the business register last year, Zurich recorded the highest number of new companies (+213 / +2%), while Vaud (4,847 / +1%) and Geneva (4,109 / 0%) took second and third spots on the podium respectively. The most significant declines were observed in Uri (123 / -12%) and Bern (4'063 / -8%).
In terms of sectors, "health services" (+12%), "land transport and logistics" (+12%) and "personal services" (+10%) increased. On the other hand, "wholesale trade" (-16%) and "organizations and associations" (-9%) saw a significant decrease in the number of companies.
