A differentiation is made between the following: horizontal diversification (when the new product conforms to the current technique, experience and practice of the business); vertical diversification (when the business expands its current activity upstream or downstream); lateral diversification (when it features the entry of the business into a new sector of activity, for example the launch of a product on a market that has not yet been exploited).
