
(18.03.2026) The Swiss hotel industry achieved a historic result for the third consecutive year. The sector recorded 43.9 million overnight stays in 2025, an increase of 2.6% compared with 2024, according to the final results of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
Foreign demand reached a record level, with 22.8 million overnight stays (+3.7% compared with 2024). At the same time, domestic guests also reached a new high, with 21.1 million overnight stays (+1.4%). Compared with December 2024, December 2025 showed the strongest year-over-year increase (+6.8%), illustrating sustained momentum through the end of the year.
The United States recorded the largest absolute increase among foreign markets, with +190,000 overnight stays (+5.4% / 3.7 million total), an unprecedented performance. The United Kingdom posted its best result since 2010 (+7.5%), while Germany remained the leading foreign market, with 3.9 million overnight stays (+2%). France also recorded its strongest result in more than 30 years (1.5 million overnight stays/+2.4%).
At the regional level, 11 of 13 tourist destinations recorded an increase in overnight stays compared with the previous year. The Canton of Vaud (+5.8%), the Zurich region (+3.5%), and Graubünden (+2.8%) were the main drivers of growth. Seven regions reached levels not seen in more than 30 years.
The net room occupancy rate rose to 56.8% (+1.7 percentage points compared with 2024), exceeding the 2019 record of 55.2%. Geneva recorded the highest rate nationwide with 67.9%, followed by the Basel region with 60.3%.
