(24.07.2024) Swiss manufacturing companies remain cautious about adopting artificial intelligence (AI). A study by ETH Zurich in collaboration with Swissmem, involving 208 companies, reveals that only 28% have developed a specific AI strategy.

In the industrial sector, companies primarily aim to deploy AI technologies to optimize machine usage and improve maintenance forecasting.

However, more than half of the surveyed companies (51%) have not yet considered using AI in their manufacturing activities. Nearly one in five companies (19%) consider AI irrelevant, while 22% are currently planning or conducting tests. Only 2% of respondents have widely implemented AI in their manufacturing processes.

Despite the currently low integration rate, many manufacturing companies plan to incorporate AI into their activities. Within the next three years, nearly 16% anticipate large-scale deployment, while 21.5% aim to launch a pilot phase.

The stance of manufacturing executives on AI varies significantly. Among the 144 organizations that have adopted or tested these new technologies, over 28% reported results "below" or "well below" their expectations.

According to the report, the degree of AI integration largely depends on profitability: nearly 52% of high-income companies consider integrating AI into their processes, while this proportion drops to 24% for lower-income companies.
