(07.08.2024) The number of insolvency proceedings in Switzerland continues to rise. According to the consulting firm Dun & Bradstreet, 3,006 companies shut down in the first half of 2024. This marks a 7% increase compared to the same period last year.
The most significant increases in deregistrations from the commercial register occurred in Central Switzerland (384, +27%), Eastern Switzerland (336, +12%), and the canton of Zurich (552, +10%). The Lake Geneva region and Northwestern Switzerland saw more modest rises in bankruptcies, with increases of 7% (694 and 397, respectively). In Ticino, the situation remained relatively stable (179, +2%), while the only region to see a decrease in insolvency proceedings was the Mittelland (464, -11%).
Industry figures indicate that companies in the automotive services (96, +43%) and real estate (87, +38%) sectors suffered the most in the first half of 2024. Bankruptcies in the manufacturing and personal services sectors also saw a significant increase, rising by 16% during the same period.
On the other hand, the Swiss economy saw the addition of many new businesses. There were 27,106 new registrations in the various commercial registers across the country, representing a 2% increase compared to the first half of 2023.
The Lake Geneva region (6,055, +5%) and Eastern Switzerland (3,439, +3%) saw the most significant increases in new business registrations. Conversely, the Mittelland region experienced stagnant growth year-over-year, while Ticino saw a decrease (1,217, -2%).
The automotive services sector (+16%), education, museums, and galleries (+13%), and transportation and travel (+11%) were the most prolific industries. However, commerce (-5%), gastronomy and hospitality (-2%), manufacturing (-1%), and medical and social services (-1%) all saw a decline in the number of new companies launched in the first half of 2024.
