(29.03.2023) Starting in April, the Swiss tourism industry will extend its sustainability program Swisstainable to the country's tourist destinations. Launched two years ago and adopted by 1,700 establishments, the tool helps promote the implementation of concrete sustainable measures within the industry.

The test phase is already underway in partnership with four urban and mountain destinations across the country: Basel Tourism, Lenzerheide Marketing & Support AG, Lucerne Tourism AG and Tourism Engadin Scuol Samnaun Val Müstair AG. The program will be open to all Swiss tourist destinations from the date of its official launch, to be held in Interlaken on April 4 and 5.

As with the program for individual establishments, the new program for local tourism federations is divided into three levels: committed (level I) / engaged (level II) / leading (level III).

Specifically, participants are expected to set up a sustainability coordination center, ensure that sustainability is integrated into their tourism strategy, develop a concrete plan of action, and actively communicate about sustainability. A number of establishments in their area will also be expected to join the "Swisstainable" program.

Created in 2021 by the University of Lucerne (HSLU), Switzerland Tourism and the Swiss Tourism Federation, the Swisstainable program has been swiftly adopted by many establishments. It aims to "improve the visibility of the tourism sector's commitment to sustainability and provide transparency and benchmarks for customers."
