Entrepreneurial climate improves

(22.03.2023) Despite a few shortcomings, Switzerland remains a favorable country for entrepreneurship. According to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor's (GEM) National Entrepreneurship Context Index (NECI), the country ranks 8th with a score of 5.8. This is Switzerland's highest ranking since 2019.

The NECI index evaluates 51 economies worldwide to determine which ones are most inclined to foster and support entrepreneurship. It assesses 13 criteria, including access to entrepreneurial financing, government policies, socio-cultural norms, and entrepreneurial education in mandatory schooling.

In 2022, Switzerland improved its score on 9 out of the 13 criteria of the NECI index, particularly in the "Entrepreneurial Education Post-School", and achieved an overall score of 5.8, which is 0.3 points higher than the previous year.

However, the country continues to suffer from an unfavorable environment in terms of "Ease of Entry to Entrepreneurship (Market Dynamics)" (3.8) and "Entrepreneurial Education at School" (3.6). Despite its good scores (6 or higher) in 6 of the 13 criteria assessed, Switzerland still only ranks 8th, ahead of South Korea and Qatar, but behind Indonesia and Lithuania.

In 2019, when the index was first published, Switzerland ranked first with a score of 6.1. However, the pandemic slowed down this momentum and caused Switzerland's overall score to drop to 5.4 (10th place) in 2020 and 5.5 in 2021 (9th place).

Although Switzerland improved its score to 5.8 in 2022, the significant improvement in the entrepreneurial climate in other economies, such as a score of 7.2 in the United Arab Emirates (1st) and 6.3 in Saudi Arabia (2nd), prevented Switzerland from achieving a higher ranking.
