(13.04.2022) Swiss retailers experienced a strong February 2022. According to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), retail sales increased by 13.3% in nominal terms, compared to February 2021.

Turnover adjusted for sales days and holidays, rose in the Swiss retail sector by more than 12% in real terms, taking into account inflation. The increase is mainly due to the low figure during the comparison period. This is because, by February 2021, the Swiss economy and household consumption had been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic measures.

Excluding service stations, sales volume increased by 12.6% in nominal terms (in real terms: 12.4%). Retail sales of food, drinks, and tobacco registered a decrease of 3.8% in nominal terms (in real terms: 3.3%). The non-food sector saw sales increase by 35.2% in nominal terms (33.8% in real terms).

Compared to February 2020, which was the last pre-pandemic month, the increase is less marked. Retail sales, excluding service stations, rose in February 2022 by 4.1% in nominal terms (4.5% in real terms).

Compared to the previous month of January 2022, the retail sector's seasonally adjusted turnover increased by 0.3% in nominal terms (0.1% in real terms).
