(17.08.2022) Swiss retailers have shown an encouraging performance. According to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), the sector's sales grew by 3.2% in nominal terms between June 2021 and 2022.

Adjusted for sales days and public holidays, retail sales turnover rose by 1.2% in real terms, i.e. including inflation.

After two months of decline (-5.6% in March and -4.7% in April 2022), nominal retail sales returned to growth in May (+0.4%). However, this is still well below the figures for January (+6.1%) and February 2022 (+13.8%).

The highest performing category was service stations (+21.1%), which maintained an upward trajectory that began in March 2021 and reached +29.8% in November 2021. Fuel sales were up 32.8% from June 2021.

Among the other categories, "retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialized stores" (which includes computers, software, telecommunication, audio/video equipment, etc.) grew by 6.4% in nominal terms. The "retail sale of other household equipment in specialized stores" (textiles, furniture, electrical appliances, etc.), meanwhile, fell by 8.7% between June 2021 and June 2022. It was the fourth consecutive month of decline for this segment (-20.3% in March, -13.5% in April, -12.6% in May).

The "non-food retail sale (excluding service stations)", which includes the above categories as well as retail sale of cultural and leisure goods in specialized stores, retail sale of other goods, retail sale in stalls and markets, and mail order and internet sales, reached 3.4% (+1.8% in real terms), a figure comparable to the average for the entire retail trade sector.
