(27.04.2022) Bankruptcies are increasing in the majority of regions. According to data and analytics consulting firm Dun&Bradstreet, the number of bankruptcies increased to 758 in January and February 2022, representing a 17 percent increase over the first two months of 2021.

Zurich (+64%), the Espace Mittelland (+41%), and Central Switzerland (+18%) are the regions most affected by the increase in insolvency-related company closures. On the other hand, in the first two months of the year, Ticino, Eastern Switzerland, and South-Western Switzerland recorded decreases of 11%, 6%, and 2% respectively, compared to the previous year.

In terms of industry sectors, the timber and furniture industry, craftsmen, construction and the hotel industry are particularly at risk of bankruptcy. The insurance and finance sectors, durable goods production, and wholesale trade have a better chance of survival.

The Dun&Bradstreet study also notes a decline in the number of newly created companies, which had reached record levels last year. A total of 8,033 companies were founded in the first two months of 2022, a decrease of 1% compared to last year.

The cantons of Eastern Switzerland (AI, AR, GL, GR, SG, SH, TG) have been the most active with an overall increase of 5%. Central Switzerland (LU, NW, OW, SZ, UR, ZG) also recorded positive results with an increase of 4%.
