Financing of start-ups in Europe: Switzerland in 4th position

(27.04.2022) Swiss start-ups are benefiting from buoyant investment trends. According to auditing and consulting firm EY's "Startup Barometer", the country has recorded more than 600 rounds of funding in 2021, placing it 4th in Europe.

In 2021, the 623 transactions with start-ups no more than ten years old in Switzerland were 15% higher than in 2020. Only the UK, Germany, and France fared better last year.

Zurich is the fifth most active city in Europe with 197 transactions, behind London, Berlin, Paris, and Barcelona. In comparison, the Uk’s capital, undisputed champion of venture capital in Europe, accounted for 1,557 financing rounds.

Last year, the amounts invested in start-ups in Switzerland reached EUR 2,734 million, which is an annual increase of over 50%. The country ranks 7th in Europe in terms of funding volume. Pharmaceuticals and biotech sectors received the most money from investors.

Across the European countries surveyed, venture capital investment volumes reached EUR 88.1 billion. This is up 141% compared to 2020. Transactions increased by 25% annually to 8,397.
