(24.08.2022) The number of bankruptcies in Switzerland continued to rise in the first half of 2022. According to consultancy firm Dun & Bradstreet, 2,310 companies filed for bankruptcy - up 20% compared to the same period in 2021. At the same time, the number of business start-ups has fallen by 4%.
In June 2022 alone, the number of insolvency proceedings nationwide increased by 19% (450, compared to 378 in June 2021).
Some regions were particularly affected by the trend. The biggest increases were recorded in Zurich (+37%). Northwestern Switzerland (+27%), the Espace Mittelland (+25%), Central Switzerland (+20%), and Eastern Switzerland (+18%) recorded higher or similar figures to the national average.
The situation is slightly more stable in the Lake Geneva region (+8%) and Ticino (+7%), but remains less promising than at the beginning of the year: between January and April 2022, the number of bankruptcies fell by 1% in the Lake Geneva region and by 10% in Ticino.
Company start-ups remain sluggish, with a decline of 4% nationwide. In the Zurich region, new companies remained virtually unchanged in the first half of 2022 (less than 1% difference). However, it fell by 8% in Northwestern Switzerland, by 7% in the Espace Mittelland, and by 4% in Central Switzerland. The Lake Geneva region (-2%) and Ticino (-3%) fared slightly better.
Only eight cantons saw an increase in the number of new businesses: Appenzell Ausserrhoden (+1%), Appenzell Innerrhoden (+17%), Fribourg (+5%), Glarus (+3%), Jura (+6%), Obwalden (+5%), St. Gallen (+1%) and Vaud (+1%).
