(31.08.2022) The automotive market is subject to the vagaries of global supply chains. In July, fewer than 16,000 passenger cars were put on the road, a year-on-year decline of 19.4%, according to the industry association AutoSuisse.

After a slight improvement at the beginning of 2022 (+5.1% in January and +2.9% in February), the number of newly registered passenger vehicles each month remained below the figure recorded a year earlier. It reached a particularly low level in April 2022, with a decrease of 29.1% compared to the same month in the previous year.

In the first seven months of 2022, there were about 125,000 registrations, compared with nearly 145,000 in 2021, a drop of 13%. In 2019, the number of passenger cars put on the road between January and July totaled over 180,000.

All industry players, from dealers and importers to garages, are going through a difficult period, "which will probably last until the end of 2022 or even the beginning of 2023," says Christoph Wolnik, spokesman for the association.

The market for hybrid and electric cars is booming. The market share of alternative-powered cars has reached almost 50% in cumulative terms since the beginning of the year. Over 60,000 registered vehicles in 2022 will have a hybrid, electric, gas or hydrogen engine, and one-third will run exclusively on battery power. This is the first time that the 20,000 mark has been passed so early in the year. Add to this the 10,000+ plug-in hybrids on the road since the beginning of the year, and the market share of plug-in vehicles reaches a high of almost 25%. In other words, one in four new cars in 2022 can be charged via the electricity grid.
